Historic agreement between mobile phone operator Orange and French MPA CSDEM

Orange France has signed an historic agreement with French MPA CSDEM to provide the first legal lyrics consultation site in that country. Once launched, the site will give free access to over 7000 French-language musical compositions. Orange will in addition continue its policy of teaming up with the relevant beneficiaries to offer an enhanced musical experience on all fronts. Future Orange subscribers will notably have access to a downloading music service via computers and mobile phones through the company’s online music store and they will also benefit from further music advantages via Orange TV.

ICMP is holding a Board meeting on Monday 8 November, 2010 in Dubai, UAE

The meeting will start at 10:00 on Monday 8th and will be followed by a dinner hosted by the local organisation.

The summit with Ministry officials and other notables from the region is scheduled to last 3 hours and will be over by 14:00 on the 9th.

Forum of the European Observatory on Counterfeiting and Piracy

The European Observatory on Counterfeiting and Piracy organised a week-long forum in the European Parliament, in Brussels, from 21 to 25 June 2010 to raise MEPs’ and the public’s awareness of the dangers of counterfeiting and piracy.

On 23 June 2010 ICMP hosted the cocktail served after the ceremony where the winning schools of a logo competition for the Observatory were awarded prizes sponsored by the private sector.

World Copyright Summit

The World Copyright Summit will be organised by CISAC on 7 and 8 June 2011 in Brussels.

The main objectives of the Summit are:

To create a truly international forum where decisions are made on the future of copyright and creative industries,
To position the event as a hub where all parties involved in the creative industries – in their widest sense – can meet, debate, and compare views and business ideas, find solutions, and establish the framework for a new relationship in the 21st century,
To re-assert the value of creators’ works and to defend creators’ rights and the collective management system in the digital environment.

The ICMP General Meeting is taking place on Tuesday 8 June 2010 from 13:00 till 18:00 in the Futurista room of the Silken Gran Domine Hotel in Bilbao, Spain.

The ICMP Serious Bureau Meeting will take place on Tuesday 8 June 2010 from 13:00 to 14:00, followed by the Popular Bureau Meeting from 14:00 to 15:00, in the Futurista room of the Silken Gran Domine Hotel in Bilbao, Spain.

ICMP is holding an informal Board meeting in the restaurant, Hotel Silken Gran Domine, Bilbao, on Wednesday 9 June 2010 from 9:30 till 10:45 (ICMP Board only).

EC Public Hearing on Collective Rights Management
ICMP Statement presented by Alessandra Silvestro on 23 April 2010, Brussels

ICMP (the International Confederation of Music Publishers) is the international umbrella trade association representing the interests of the music publishing community globally. The constituent members of ICMP are national, regional and international classical and popular music publishers’ associations from Europe, North and South America and Asia‐Pacific. Included are the leading independent international, regional and national music publishers, as well as the four multinational music publishing companies.

Music publishers as members of collecting societies recognise the value of collective licensing in particular in areas not realistically licensable by writers/publishers such as off-line public performance (licensing of establishments, for instance bars and restaurants), in cases where users may need a blanket license (for example broadcasting and simulcasting), unaltered re-transmission of broadcasts, in cases such as those where levy collections are required and generally in cases of well-established business models. Generally speaking, the value of collective licensing to members is relative to how well or badly the efficiencies of scale are administered.

The European Digital Library and Orphan Works

ICMP recognises the crucial role of the European Digital Library, Europeana, in preserving and facilitating access to Europe’s cultural heritage, and welcomes the decision by the trio of Presidencies - Spain, Belgium and Hungary - to advance its creation.

The digitisation process raises the question of how to deal with orphan works and ICMP has therefore signed and fully supports the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Orphan Works, which was drawn up in June 2008 within the framework of the European Digital Libraries Initiative. While cultural institutions digitising their collections need adequate certainty to deal with orphan works, use of orphan works must respect copyright and related rights, economic and moral rights. Appropriate standards of a due diligent search must therefore precede any qualification of a work as "orphan".
